i have been lurking on these forums for about 6 months and thought it was time to join in.. i was a child/teen when i first became introduced to jehovah's witnesses through my mum who studied for a while but never fully committed.
i had a study and attended some meetings but it all petered out by the time i hit my late teens and we moved to another town.. for the following 10 years i just lived my life how i pleased.
got married etc.

i just can't believe all the trouble witness kida are having lately in my area( (vancouver b.c).
3 years ago a witness kid (18 years old) jumped off a bridge to his death.. the latest news from the jw grapevine is that a jw kid that i knew (he is now 20) is in the insane assylum.
it seems he was found swimming towards bethel from vancouver (he left a note) this was at least a 1000 miles away and he never would have made it.

The younster was obviously mentally ill. He has a lifetime of challanges to deal with.
I think you can use statistics to prove whatever you want. A bunch of concientious objectors in Sweden are not representative of all of JW's. That's fricken ludicrous. Yeah, they can be zealots, but that doesn't mean that the religion breeds mental illness. My personal opinion is that the "Truth" simply attracts unstable people. This is whether it is a short term instability, (like me at the hieght of my guilt ridden zealotry) or long term whackos who are in for the long haul. I dont think it makes you nuts, you have to be a little off kilter emotionally or otherwise to join the collective.

i've been on plenty of jcs but i never was the target of the elders, judicially.....although i would be now.
After 11 years of inactivenesssss I came back and had to clear my slate. Met with JC, was privately reproooved and on my way again. I was the one who approached them from out of nowhere, they didn't even know who I was practically. ( I was never in thier congregation.) Years later I sat on a few committees as one of the three. I remember thinking, who the hell am I to sit here and judge these people? I always faulted on the side of compassion because I'd been a weak person too. Only one was disfellowshipped, but he beat the crap out of his wife and was drunk all the time. Sorry, he needed to go. SHe was too intimidated to leave him. Its been a few years, they are divorced and he is now dead. Drank himself that way. Would have done so whether he were DF'd or not. Poor man was beyond help. Five times to rehab etc. Some people have a death wish. No one in his family honored the DF shunning any way. He was reinstated and DF'd three more times by his new congregation before he died. He was a nice guy when he was sober.

I was Service Overseer in our congregation when we did the Kingdom News #? can't remember what number, the usual end of the world crap. I was single and pioneering. I took it to heart and in that month and a week we literally covered EVERY ONE OF OUR TERRITORIES. It was phenominal. I was on top of all the territories and was almost like Eisnehower directing the U.S. Army. We were everywhere. We have a huge and rural territory here in northern California.
What did we get for all our hard work? I think I was sick for two weeks afterwards!

a few weeks ago on the convention i met this elder, and he wants to visit me to talk.. he was quite liberal.
his daughter has been df-ed and she was going to meet him at the convention.
she came when we were still talking.
You're right, he's on shaky ground since he talks to the DF'd daughter. Let us know what he has to say when you talk to him. Sounds like he just might be a candidate for escape!

im at my dads house at the moment and they have this dog thats 14 years old, and apparently this brand of dog has an average life expectancy of 10, so shes had a good innings.. now im not a dog owner, so its pretty easy for me to say i think they should put the dog down.
my dads wife is very sentimental about the dog.
i would say she was very attached to it, but for all her sentimentality, she has never walked the dog (its always been my dad) and she is not the one who gets up in the night with a mop and bucket - that'd be dad too.

why didn't the preaching work stop prior to 1975?
it doesn't look like it's going to stop anytime soon either.
i raised this question before i stopped attending the meetings in the late 90's and the answer i was given was, "it has slowed down a lot and will eventually stop when the time is right".
Remember that in 1975 there was no open preaching in any of the Eastern Block countries. There was still lots to do, so there was no slowdown, They had to hear one way or another. I remember thinking how unfair it was to the commies that the preaching work wasn't going on there on a grand scale too.
Its all a joke.
